Protect the World

Protect the world!
Protect its atoms and spinning wildness!

Leave destruction to the
Schizophrenic destroyers,
Rapt and spellbound
In their learned unity.

Their wisdom is folly,
But together, our wisdom will be
Like wild flowers
Encircling the sun —
Like a child
Embracing his mother.

A child can be wise
When growth is freedom,
When eyes look outward
Beyond the horizon,
And inward,
Beyond the self.

The stopwatch is ticking,
The iMac is grinding,
The grid is buzzing,
And to what end
Shall the leaves
On the artificial tree
Rustle?

Can I fix my broken world
With a poem?
My un-surities rise sloshing,
Like the tide of sludge.
If you knew what I mean,
You and I would not be together,
For you would have
Destroyed yourself.

But our crises shall pass
And the sun will still be there.
